Ok ok. I didn't watch all of Impact last night. It's the first time in a while that I haven't, but I'm pretty sure I have a good excuse. Read my last article and find out why!
If you were me, you'd do the show and interview too, right?
Ah, the busy life of a journalist! The second we went off the air, I turned on Impact. Knowing I missed half the show, I figured it would be tough to put out the IMPACT player of the week, but I trust that you guys will forgive me for a week. This is only based on half the show as I have read about the other half and don't like searching for it. If it takes more than a minute to find, it's not worth my time.
What I did see was about status quo for the show.......except for one segment. We had a long power struggle segment, a short Knockouts match which I thought could have been bigger and better (if built and done on PPV that is), an X-Division squash which looks to be the new norm, and a "first time ever" 5 star main event....that lasted 7 minutes. In just an hour, I saw two promos for that main event and half of it was focused on Jeff Jarrett and his wife's horse face. Not a great ending to a show where "wrestling matters".
Now, I'm not as crazy about the new motto as some, but I was quite disappointed in that match. However, through a muddle of mediocrity was one segment that was either the stupidest thing you've ever seen or the best thing on the show. At first, i thought it was the former, but the more I thought about it, the more I could buy into it as it's actually better than the rest of the stuff on the show.
Last week, we saw Eric Young steal Gunner's TV title. As stupid as that sounds, it pissed Gunner off. For a guy that has no personality other than being "intense guy #7" in TNA, this was something that actually should elicit that emotion.
Fast forward to last night and Eric Young wanted to re-enact the "fingerpoke of doom" so Gunner could get his title back. They did, but Young rolled up Gunner to win the title fair and square! Yes, Eric Young is your new Television Champion and the IMPACT player of the week.
At first, I thought this was the end to all the credibility of that belt. Then I remembered that it never had credibility to begin with! What we needed more than anything was an actual feud for the belt and I think this one actually works. Eric Young is a jokester while Gunner doesn't have a funny bone in his body. This personality clash makes for a decent feud as EY can antagonize Gunner with shenanigans while Gunner will rebutt with pure anger. This has the potential to be pretty entertaining and the end result could honestly go both ways.
For it to work though, Eric Young needs to carry the feud. He needs to be hilarious to the point where Gunner hates him. If he can do that, it can really work. So far, he has done just fine, but I want better! That said, Eric Young hasn't held this belt since it was called the Global Title I believe, so this could be great for him.
Winning a title often lands you praise and that's certainly the case here. For outsmarting an intense idiot, Eric Young is officially the IMPACT player of the week. Congratulations!
